probably the best computer case i have ever seen...but worth the $300?, maybe4
I recently purchased the gunmetal DZ3 for a 15" powerbook. My first impressions out of the box were: A. the "gunmetal" finish is a baked on matte enamel? coating which will inevitably chip and scratch-not anything like my own conception of gunmetal--blued steel--nonetheless I think the aluminum/chrome would be too conspicuous; and B. the case is nonetheless impressively built.

It wasn't until opening and closing the case that I noticed some rather small quality issues with the hardware. Notably, the continuous piano hinge (actually two hinges butted together) allowed for some slop in the folding together of the case resulting in the latches not always being able to grab onto the lid easily. The 3-dig combination lock was not very impressive--it looks like any cheap lock on any cheap piece of luggage--not what I was expecting on a $300 case; although I'm sure the lock is perfectly effective. There is a folding arm, which locks in place to keep the lid open: this is a great feature except for the fact that there is only one on the right side causing uneven resistance when closing the lid--this contributes to the play in alignment between top and bottom halves. The included shoulder strap locks onto the case in an innovative way (a keyhole slot that is "locked" shut) that is really tough to pull off.

Now for the pros--the latches themselves are magnificent and the physical shell of the case is well made, well designed and unbelievably tough. The seam is a continuous tongue and groove joint which is gasketed--very nice. The foaming out of the interior is spartan but excellent. You may wanna subtract 1/16" of an inch to the listed interior dimensions--I thought my powerbook would actually have a slight amount of wiggle room but it sits inside really snug. The handle is a crude molded piece of black ABS plastic but tough. The black plastic feet at bottom are tough. Zero Hallibutrton offers a lifetime warranty and the hardware can be refurbished and replaced.

Despite the negatives I have mentioned, this is still the nicest computer case I have ever seen and I am generally satisfied with my purchase. Still I can't give 5 stars for a $300 case which has some issues however trivial.
